Safe from the flood zone
The Mackay floods have been nothing short of a devastation for the city with 624mm of rain falling in 10 hours this past 15th February - the largest downpour the city has seen in 90 years. The cleanup and floods damage has estimated to reach over tens of millions of dollars.
Mackay Mayor Julie Boyd has estimated up to 4,000 properties in the region have been affected by the floods. There was reportedly a small retirement village of 54 residents that were all rescued by the SES and anyone that could give a hand.
As for Plantation Palms, the site has been relatively unaffected due to its excellent drainage, sandy soils and location on higher ground in the Northern Beaches. The rainwaters have been draining into the proposed wetland and lake system areas as expected, and there was only minimal damage to the Plantation Palms marketing suite (there was only a single wall where a small amount of water seeped in).
Construction is still underway and going very well. The workers were unable to work on the days during the rainfall, however as soon as the sun came out they were back on site constructing.
Plantation Palms is one of the only, if not the only, subdivisions which has remained relatively untouched from the recent flood disasters.
